I got some interesting news from the Sci Fi wire about a possible remake of Robocop.
Okay there have been a lot of remakes lately in Hollywood. So many that it's a little silly. I guess you could call Batman a remake... but considering the original movies didn't capture what Batman is all about in the modern time (theories about the movies capturing the feeling of different era's of Batman my ass! People now like Batman now damn it!) I won't count that... partly because it takes away from my theory below. Anyhoo there have been other remakes, Dawn of the Dead, Planet of the Apes, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Guess Who, the planned remake of Evil Dead. Oh and lets not forget about Battlestar Galactica. Anyhoo those are all fine and good because I was never much of a fan of any of them, and most of them were made before I was born. But now they are talking about frelling up one of the holy grails, namely Robocop. Part of the reason I don't like this is one I remember when this movie came out, another is I really like this movie, and lastly they got Robocop right the first time. Robocop captued the zeitgeist of the 80's, remaking it means that you would have to capture the zeitgeist of now... given there are a lot of simularities to the 80's and now. Corperations and government run amok a bit, the enviornment in trouble etc. Which raises a tangenty question, we are in a frelling war where the hell are all the rock folk people! In any event, Robocop got it right the first time... the sequels... well Robocop got it right the first time. It doesn't need to be remade because it's not as if the movie is old enough to be forgotten, or old enough not to hold up. But I bet they will remake it... like I bet they will remake Farscape in the future and totally frell it up. In any event don't remake movies that got it right the first time, or aren't more than 30 years old.
